A harm reduction model is an approach to substance abuse treatment that focuses on reducing the negative consequences of drug use. This is not the 1950s! New times call for new measures.  An estimated 420,000 people a year die from drug overdose. The harm reduction model acknowledges that complete abstinence may not be immediately achievable for all individuals struggling with substance use, and therefore aims to reduce the risks and harm associated with drug use, while also providing support for individuals to work towards their own personal goals.

In a harm reduction model, drug treatment centers may offer a range of services and interventions, such as:

Medication-assisted treatment: This involves using a medication, such as suboxone or other medications to help manage withdrawal and post-acute withdrawal symptoms reducing drug cravings.

Counseling and support services: These can include individual or group therapy, peer support groups, and education on harm reduction strategies.

By taking a harm reduction approach, drug treatment centers can help individuals reduce the negative consequences of drug use, improve their overall health and well-being, and ultimately work towards their own personal goals, whether that be abstinence or reduced use.
